April was a joyful, busy, and chocolate filled month here at Hengoed Park. With Spring in full bloom, our residents enjoyed a packed calendar of activities that lifted spirits, sparked creativity and learning. Lets take a look back at some of the moments that made April so special.
We marked birthdays in true celebratory style- with cake, candles and more singing than strictly needed (some of it may even have been in tune). Residents enjoyed cosy coffee shop trips, catching up over cups of tea and a slice of cake or two.
Residents showed off their competitive streaks during the weekly bowling outings, with some impressive scores! We also explored the past with a visit to a local heritage site, Stori Brymbo, sparking discussions from years gone by.
We saw a flurry of activity, and icing sugar, in our community centre as residents took part in cooking sessions that were as educational as they were delicious. With a focus on improving cooking skills residents learn (or re- learn) processes from start to finish. Monday afternoons are designated cooking sessions – giving those who like to go shopping a purpose in the morning as they create a shopping list, go out and purchase ingredients needed and then offers a chance for residents to cook something they’ve always wanted to try, or an old favourite in the afternoon. Lasagne, Sheperds Pie, Pizza and Sausage Ragu have been a few favourites so far!
One of April’s stand out moments was a leisurely cruise along the local waterways upon the Heulwen Trust canal boat. With the sun shining and not a raindrop in sight, they set off towards Pool Quay to a turning point and then back through Welshpool before returning to the trust. Residents took in the beautiful surroundings, spring blooms and the odd duck looking for snacks along the way. The trip was made extra special thanks to the skipper who treated them to a longer journey and plenty of refreshments along the way! The wonderful team at Heulwens Trust offer free access to disabled passengers and their carers – a gesture that made the outing even more accessible and appreciated by all.
Last but by no means least, residents lit up the dancefloor at The Flamingo Lounge in the Ro Lo nightclub for a vibrant, inclusive disco. Tailored for people with learning disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and people of all abilities and ages people enjoyed an evening of dancing, karaoke and soft drinks in a safe, fun and empowering environment.
